December 2024: Best Gas Credit Cards from Our Partners
Saving money on gas is simple when you sign up for gas rewards credit cards. Different gas cards give different percentages of cash back on gas purchases. Although most cards don't offer their biggest rewards in one category all year-round, some gas cards do advertise a 3-5% rebate on gas all year. Carry two different credit cards that rotate a 5% cash back offer in different categories. When one card doesn't offer fuel savings, the other one may, so you can use the card that offers you the most cash back.
NB! 1% cash back is 3.04¢ savings per gallon at current gas prices (2% cash back ~ 6.08¢/gal and 5% cash back ~ 15.2¢/gal).**

BASICS
Fuel prices continue to soar, and the cost of a tank of gas is higher than ever. Using a gas rewards credit card can ease that expense, with plenty of cards offering more than the usual 1% cash back or 1 point per dollar. Some even offer up to 5% cash back and if you spend $90 filling your tank every week, that would put $18 back in your pocket each month. Do your homework, and you can find a credit card that pays you back every time you find yourself at pump.
Gas rebate credit cards come in two different types - those offered by gas companies, which can only be used at their specific stations, and those issued by banks, which are traditional credit cards that offer rewards on gas purchased and on all other purchases as well. The first type of gas rewards credit card is good for someone who always fills up at the same station or buys the same gas brand, like Shell or BP. The second type of cards is good for someone who is not tied to any gas station and never look for a specific gas brand to fill up.
Similar to cash back rewards cards, but aimed at the customers looking to get the most cash back at the pump, gas rewards cards offer their highest percentage of cash back on fuel purchases, and lower percentages in other categories. If you choose a point rewards credit card, then it will offer more points for buying gas and a standard 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.
When you use a general credit card with gas rewards to save on gas purchases, points or cash back you earn can be redeemed for statement credits, or cash. Rewards can also be converted into different gift cards, which sometimes is the best redemption option. As for the gas-branded credit cards, they will either provide you an immediate discount at a pump or they will give you rewards redeemable for gift cards of this gas company. As you can see, brand cards limit your redemption options, while traditional credit cards allow to use earned cash back or points for multiple redemption options.
