how to choose A TRAVEL
CREDIT CARD
There are lots of various travel credit cards for any need and any wallet: from premium travel cards to simple travel credit cards with no annual fee, from airline or hotel co-branded credit cards to general travel credit cards. To easily navigate through all kinds of travel cards, you need to, first of all, understand what you want to get from a travel credit card, how often you travel, how much flexibility you want, and how much you value airline or hotel perks.
When you choose a travel credit card, you will want to prioritize on these things:
- Rewards earning rate: you need to know what purchases will earn rewards and where you can maximize your rewards earning. Co-branded credit cards tend to offer higher rewards on purchases with a particular airline or a hotel, and general travel cards usually offer higher rewards rates on any travel related purchases. Look for at least 1.5% rewards rate on a no-fee travel card and 2% rate on a card with an annual fee.
- Rewards you will actually use: while rewards are important, they are useless if you cannot redeem them. General travel cards give more flexibility when it comes to using rewards: you can redeem for past travel purchases as statement credits, transfer to travel partners, redeem for gift cards or even cash. With co-branded credit cards, you are usually tied to a brand and cannot use rewards anywhere outside that brand.
- Welcome bonus: sign-up bonuses may be lucrative, but they are one-time offers and if you plan on keeping a travel credit card, ongoing rewards would be your main criteria. Still, getting a bonus of 75,000 points or even 100K bonus points for a relatively small spending is a fantastic perk. Just make sure spending requirements are feasible for you.
If you are a frequent traveler, there are other travel perks that can be important to you. For example, you may want a travel credit card with access to airport lounges, or the one that gives elite status with hotels. Many best travel rewards credit cards come with travel protections such as trip delay reimbursement, lost luggage reimbursement, or trip cancellation/interruption insurance. However, if you are out for perks, be ready to pay a rather high annual fee for the travel card that offers them.
