A new set of Chase Freedom 5% bonus categories for the third quarter has been revealed. If you have an eligible Chase credit card, you can log in to your account and activate now.
The third quarter starts on July 1, 2024, and ends on September 30, 2024. The activation window for 5% cash back bonus categories is open from now and through September 14, 2024. We would recommend you not to wait long and head to your Chase account and activate now. If you have a Chase mobile app, you can activate bonus categories from there as well. If you have multiple Chase Freedom credit cards, make sure you activate for each one.
Here is an overview of the new 5% cash back bonus categories for Q3:
- Gas stations: eligible merchants are those who primarily sell automotive gasoline that can be paid for either at the pump or inside the station. Purchases at merchants that do not sell automotive gasoline may not qualify for 5% cash back (for example, truck stops, boat marinas, oil and propane distributors, and home heating companies).
- EV charging: eligible merchants are those who sell electric vehicle charging services that can be paid at the charging station, via mobile app, account/subscription or an attendant. Not included: residential electric vehicle charging and electric vehicle charging equipment purchases and servicing for any use, including residential or commercial.
- Select live entertainment: eligible merchants are those who sell tickets for live in-person entertainment such as major professional sporting events, zoos and aquariums, concerts, theatrical productions, museums, tourist attractions and exhibits, amusement parks, circuses, carnivals, bands, and entertainers. Plus, purchases made through tickets agencies that sell on behalf of the entertainment venue are also eligible. Not eligible: movie theaters, bowling alleys, horse racing tracks, casinos, dance hall/clubs, purchases from a hotel/concierge, excursions purchases, and purchases as part of a travel package.
- Movie theaters: eligible merchants are those who show motion pictures to an audience, including at drive-in theaters. Not eligible: theaters that provide live entertainment and merchants that sell and rent movies or provide movie subscription or streaming services; food, drinks, or merchandise purchased at theaters may not qualify for 5% cash back.
Keep in mind that 5% cash back is not unlimited. You can earn 5% back on up to $1,500 spent in combined purchases in the bonus categories from July 1 - September 30, 2024. That translates into up to $75 cash back. When you reach the limit, you will continue earning 1% cash back on all purchases.
Chase has a full set of Freedom credit cards, however, not all are eligible for 5% cash back. Eligible credit cards are Chase Freedom* (not available to new applicants) and Chase Freedom Flex®*.
If you want to expand your 5% cash back categories, you can consider adding the Discover it Cash Back card to your set of rewards cards. With this card, you can activate 5% cashback bonus for purchases at Walmart and grocery stores (up to the quarterly limit).
